Dragon Boat Race 2024

Blog Life At Data Intellect 24 Sep 2024

Paul McVicker

This month, Data Intellect’s own DISCO Dragons took part in the annual Dragon Boat Race in support of Northern Ireland Hospice! The following blog covers their journey from initial fundraising to their performance on the day, with a stop for some tasty treats along the way!

Rowing Pains

To start the fundraising (and to get some practice) the team took turns using the rowing machine to raise both awareness and money for the Northern Ireland Hospice!

The rowathon took place at Royal Avenue, with each member of the team taking half an hour out of their day to come along and have a go on the rowing machine. Each person gave it their all, with Andrew leading the way, managing to row a very impressive 6km during his half hour slot!

Rebecca and Katrina were also present in full DISCO Dragons uniform to help raise spirits and to get the team focused on their final goal!

Thank you to everyone who took part!

Bake Sale

The second fundraising event for the Dragon Boat race was a little less taxing on the arms, with a bake sale being held in the office.

Each member of the team brought with them a great selection of home made treats, and everyone in the office was invited over for a cup of coffee and to help support a great cause!

The fundraiser was a great success, with our team having raised money and also eaten enough to fuel them for the big race, which leads us to...

Race Day

After all the preparation in the weeks leading up to the event, the final race day occurred on the 14th of September.

It was an early start for the team, with the first race occurring at 10:30am, with the team arriving from 9am to get prepared to brave the cold winds over the Lagan. There were 18 teams competing, with each team racing twice, with the 4 teams having the highest average time advancing to the semi-finals.

Despite a valiant effort (and an impeccable dress sense), the team were unfortunately unable to qualify for the semi-finals. Despite this, the team's two main goals were achieved, both to have fun and raise money for a great cause, both of which were a huge success!

In total, the team has raised over £500 (and counting) for the Northern Ireland Hospice! Thank you to everyone who donated!

That's all folks!
